Winter Haven Tree Removal Starts at the Water's Edge
Winter Haven is built around its lakes, and so are a lot of its tree problems. Oaks and cypress along the shoreline lean out toward the light over the water, roots work into soft banks, and a big limb that fails here doesn't just land in a yard — it lands on a dock, a boat lift, a seawall or in the lake itself. Taking those trees down cleanly means rigging every piece and lowering it to land, which is a different job from dropping a tree in an open back yard.
Away from the water, much of the city still carries its citrus history. Old grove trees linger behind houses, and the laurel oaks that were planted or left standing as the groves turned into neighborhoods are now old for their species — often hollow, often shedding big limbs onto roofs. Aging laurel oaks like these are exactly the kind of tree UF/IFAS hurricane studies rank among the least wind-resistant.
The calls we get most
- Leaning oaks over docks and boathouses on the north and south chains — see lakefront tree service.
- Hollow laurel oaks over roofs and screened pools — usually a removal, sometimes a careful trim.
- "Is this tree safe?" questions before storm season — our tree risk assessment walks through decay, lean and what's underneath.
- Broken tops and uprooted trees after hurricanes — storm damage cleanup with photos for the adjuster.
Tree rules depend on where you live. Most of the city follows the City of Winter Haven's code, while Eloise, Wahneta, Inwood, Jan Phyl Village and Cypress Gardens are largely in unincorporated Polk County. Lakefront work can bring in separate shoreline rules too. We check which apply on every estimate — the Winter Haven tree permit guide explains the basics, including Florida's 2019 law for trees that are a documented danger to a home.

FAQ
Winter Haven Tree Service FAQ
Most Winter Haven removals run $325 to $850 for a small tree, $850 to $1,800 for a medium tree and $1,800 to $3,600 or more for a large oak. Lakefront work, a tree over a roof or screen enclosure, a hollow trunk, or the need for a crane push the price up. You get a fixed written price after the free estimate.
Yes. On lakefront lots we rig each piece and lower it to the bank instead of dropping it, protect the dock with boards, and keep debris out of the water. If a tree is mostly over the lake, we will explain what access it needs and whether any shoreline rules apply before scheduling.
It depends on where the property is and what tree it is. Inside city limits the City of Winter Haven's code applies; places like Eloise, Wahneta and Jan Phyl Village fall mostly under Polk County. Florida law also exempts homeowners from local permits for trees documented as a danger by an ISA certified arborist or licensed landscape architect. We confirm the rules for your address on every estimate.
Laurel oaks grow fast but are short-lived for an oak, and many in older neighborhoods and former grove land are now well along in years. They commonly decay from the inside, so a tree can look leafy and healthy while the trunk is hollow. Big dead limbs, fungus on the trunk and cracks are the warning signs.
It is a closer look at whether a tree is likely to fail and what it would hit. We check for decay, lean, root and bank problems and the targets underneath on every estimate. If you need formal paperwork, for example for the state dangerous-tree exemption or an insurer, we can arrange a written report from an ISA certified arborist.
Trim dead fronds and seed stalks, but leave the green ones. Stripping a palm down to a few fronds, the so-called hurricane cut, weakens the tree and does not make it safer in wind. Once or twice a year is plenty for most sabal and queen palms.
Yes. After a storm we photograph the damage before we move anything, give you a written description and price for your claim, then make the property safe and clean up. Trees on houses and blocked driveways come first.
It is quoted as a separate line so you can choose. Most people have the stump ground the same day. We are careful around septic drain fields, irrigation and seawalls, and we can leave the grindings for mulch or haul them away.
